Equal

Zahra A.

You and I, we are equal.
Men of my society,
The mullah who gives fatwas at the mosque,
Who declares music haram
And entices my brother and father
To prevent me from education
And you, who thinks
That because I am a woman
I must be silent,
You, who thinks
That I have no rights,
That I have half the brains you have,
And that you are superior to me,
Higher than me,
Smarter than me,
Simply for being a man:
Why must you be prioritized?
Why must you be compensated and I silenced?
Why must your words be more valid?
Why must you live like a king and I, your slave?

Brother, know this,
I see sunlight approach my dark nights.
The fatwas you give
Will be proven false.
One day, every one will know:
You and I are equals.
